Firstly, the Text of Surah Al-Nasr:

Allah the Almighty says:

بِسْمِ اللَّـهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

إِذَا جَاءَ نَصْرُ اللَّهِ وَالْفَتْحُ

وَرَأَيْتَ النَّاسَ يَدْخُلُونَ فِي دِينِ اللَّهِ أَفْوَاجًا

فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَاسْتَغْفِرْهُ إِنَّهُ كَانَ تَوَّابًا

Secondly, the Reason for the Revelation of Surah Al-Nasr:

The scholars have two main opinions regarding the reason for the revelation of Surah Al-Nasr, based on the timing of its revelation—whether it was before or after the conquest of Mecca.

The predominant opinion among scholars is that Surah Al-Nasr was revealed as an indication of the approaching death of the Prophet ﷺ and as a herald of the conquest of Mecca. When Umar ibn Al-Khattab gathered the senior companions and asked them about the meaning of “When comes the Help of Allah, and the Victory,” they replied it meant the opening of cities and castles. Umar then asked Ibn Abbas, who said, “It is a sign of the Prophet’s death; his own soul was being bidden farewell.”

The second opinion, as narrated by Ibn Shihab Az-Zuhri, is that the Prophet ﷺ sent Khalid ibn Al-Walid to fight the Quraysh at the lower part of Mecca until Allah granted them victory. Then, the Prophet ﷺ ordered them to cease fighting, and the people entered the religion. Hence, Surah Al-Nasr was revealed. Allah knows best.

Thirdly, the Time of Revelation of Surah Al-Nasr:

There are several opinions regarding the time of revelation of Surah Al-Nasr:

1. It is said to be the last surah revealed, following Surah At-Tawbah, and it was revealed in the year the Prophet ﷺ passed away. Ibn Abbas narrated that when Surah Al-Nasr was revealed, the Prophet ﷺ said, “I have been informed of my death.” Ibn Umar stated it was revealed during the middle days of Tashreeq in the year of the Farewell Pilgrimage.

2. It is also said to have been revealed after the Battle of Hunayn, two years before the Prophet’s death.

3. Another opinion is that it was revealed during the conquest of Mecca, as narrated by Ibn Shihab Az-Zuhri.

Fourthly, the Names of Surah Al-Nasr:

1. It is named Surah Al-Nasr because it begins with “When comes the Help of Allah and the Victory.”

2. It is also called Surah At-Tawdi’ (the Farewell), as it signals the nearing end of the Prophet’s life.

Fifthly, Implications from the Story of Surah Al-Nasr:

1. It signifies the truth of the Prophet’s prophecy about the conquest of Mecca, which came to pass.

2. Gratitude, praise, and seeking forgiveness from Allah in response to the blessings bestowed upon us, as the Prophet ﷺ was commanded to glorify and seek forgiveness from Allah after the victory and conquest.

3. The assured victory from Allah, even towards the end of the Prophet’s life, demonstrates Allah’s favor and support.

4. The entry of people into the religion of Allah in multitudes is a divine victory and a reason for gratitude to Allah.

Sixthly, The Story of Surah Al-Nasr:

Surah Al-Nasr is a glad tiding from Allah to the Prophet ﷺ of victory and the influx of people into the faith. When this victory is achieved, Allah commands His Prophet ﷺ to glorify Him with praise and seek His forgiveness. Ibn Abbas said, “This surah signifies a limit set by Allah for His Prophet, informing him of his impending death.”

It was narrated that when Surah Al-Nasr was revealed, the Prophet ﷺ addressed the people, saying, “A servant has been given a choice between the life of this world and what is with Allah, and he has chosen what is with Allah.” Abu Bakr understood this and wept, saying, “May our lives, our wealth, and our fathers and children be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah.”
